It's possible that we live in a simulation created to learn more about evolution, how the ecosystems and habitats work. If most of this world's ecosystem is lost in the future, if bugs and fungi lost, if their environment is lost and all ecosystem is made up by machines and mechanics, people may try to come up with a naturally evolving system and try to understand how to enrich this mechanistic world.
Humans may be just a byproduct -- an error or noise -- in this simulation. We write our history revolving around us but maybe the real goal of the simulation is how bacteria has changed in this millions of years. Maybe the ultimate meaning resides as bacteria in intestines of a not-yet-born dog and all this stuff we call universe is to search for that.
Stories around humans and simulation don't add up in my mind. Our cognitive capabilities can be simulated in rather simpler ways than this whole world. We are too simple mentally to be simulated.
There is no point in simulating humans and we're desperate to be simulated.
